When Jonathan called us about secretly shooting this surprise proposal at Chop restaurant here in Kelowna we were super excited. We met with Jonathan the day before to go over the plan and make arrangements with the restaurant. Chop was as excited about it as we were and they were very gracious to accommodate our requests for a section to ourselves and reserving tables that allowed for some secret shooting of this romantic event.
(Disclaimer: Photographer Gear Talk Ahead!) Having professional camera gear was essential for this shoot as we were in plain sight of Kayla. We connected our iPhones to our cameras and were able to look like a boring old married couple who were more interested in being on our phones than enjoying our date. We just snapped away as our phones acted as remotes for the cameras that were neatly tucked under napkins and a scarf on our table. It was extremely low light inside and we pushed our ISO settings to 10,000 to make sure our shutter speeds were fast enough to capture the action as it unfolded. Can’t use a flash in these conditions!
As Jonathan and Kayla enjoyed their date solvingĀ a special game of hangman, a pre-arranged Martini arrived with a ring tied to the stem of the glass. Jonathan took the ring, got down on one knee, and asked Kayla to be his wife. She tearfully said yes and it was just minutes before Jonathan revealed that the boring old iPhone couple had actually just photographed and documented the whole thing! After showing a few photos to Kayla we took them out for a few quick nighttime portraits to celebrate this momentous event!
Jonathan + Kayla, we wish you guys all the best in the future and we’re so glad we could be a part of this awesome night!
